UN&UP Announces Collaboration with MagCorp™ on Florida Polytechnic Capstone Design Team

UN&UP is excited to announce a collaboration with MagCorp in supporting a multidisciplinary engineering team as part of the Florida Polytechnic University’s Capstone Design Program. This capstone is a two-semester program that provides students with the opportunity to work with real-world, open-ended, interdisciplinary challenges proposed by industrial and research project sponsors.

Interdisciplinary teams learn and apply the engineering design process: defining functional requirements, conceptualization, analysis, identifying risks and countermeasures, selection, and physical prototyping. The team UN&UP and MagCorp is supporting consists of a dozen engineering and science students focused on the task of optimizing magnetic nanoparticle separation for environmental monitoring.

Water quality monitoring of mining effluent poses a challenging problem with high turbidity and organic, as well as inorganic, debris in the liquid discharge. Too often, mining waste piles are sited adjacent to minority communities, rural communities, and tribal lands, posing a well-documented risk to potable water sources for these communities.

We look forward to working with the students and our collaborators on this novel technology to improve environmental health.
